Ms. M looked over at her daughter and thought that she too looked tired. After a very short discussion they mutually agreed that tomorrow morning they would give themselves a break and try to sleep in -- a luxury they seldom enjoyed.
Thing One and Thing Two had other ideas, however. You see Thing One and Thing Two are a pair of emus that just seem to have a knack for getting themselves in trouble and this Saturday morning was no exception. A loud knock came on their door which woke Ms. M with a start. She rolled over to look at the clock: 6 am! She was starting to slip back into a slumber wondering who would be so rude as to knock on her door at this hour of the morning when the knock came again. She pulled herself from the warm comfort of the bed, threw on a bathrobe, looked at her unbrushed hair in the mirror and decided at this hour they would just have to take her as they found her. Upon opening the door she found her neighbor on her porch in a much excited state. It seemed he had been awoken by a commotion and had found that Thing One and Thing Two had escaped from their pen and were running excitedly up and down the street. Ms. M ran out to the road and there they were running around, having the time of their lives. Now there was a slight problem. Ms. M had recently obtained these birds and had no idea how to get them back into their pen. Of one thing she was sure: they would not come if she called! As we all know, the farmers around here need to get an early start even on Saturdays and with trucks driving up and down the road and Thing One and Thing Two running in between them, sometimes beside them, things were starting to get a little messy! She turned to her neighbor and asked if he would be so kind as to please call 911 and get anyone he could out here to help. While waiting she thought she might try herding them back to their pen -- she had seen it done on television before with cattle. It became obvious that this was not going to work for as soon as she got behind them to herd them towards their pen., they would split up, circle around behind her, and start herding her! Finally a police car arrived, then another, then a fire engine, then another, and they all started discussing the situation calling in more and more emergency vehicles until Ms. M was sure that every emergency vehicle in Woodland was in her yard. Finally after much discussion, it was decided to use all the emergency vehicles and a few ranch trucks to block all the streets and use their vehicles to push Thing One and Thing Two back into their pen. Bad idea! It looked like it was going to work at first but soon the birds turned and started attacking the vehicles! That's when the newspaper reporter showed up! Everyone wants their 15 minutes of fame but this really was not the time! Here Ms. M was standing in the middle of the road in an old bathrobe and slippers, hair and teeth unbrushed and Thing One and Thing Two running around attacking cars! The only saving grace was that it could not possibly get worse. Then the strangest thing happened. A cowboy on his horse rode into the middle of all the chaos and as simple as you pleased just quietly pushed Thing One and Thing Two back into their pen. Ms. M quickly repaired the fence and the commotion was all over!
Like the commercial says, there is a hero born every day. Thank you cowboy!
